AYOBA! It is here. The day has arrived. Day one of World Cup T20 Cricket action. Big sixes, fast bowling and mind boggling spinners. The players are ready, the fans are excited, the stadiums lie waiting, the food is being prepared and truck loads of Lion lager being chilled as we write.
Mahinda Rajapakse Stadium outside of Hambantota has a capacity of crowd of 35000 people. We’ll be in the middle of all the cricketing fever and madness.
Sadly, anyone hoping that there would be a festive fireworks style, song and dance opening will be disappointed. We are. How can you have T20 action without the music, dancing girls and colourful sideshows?
It is about the cricket after all I guess. Hell yes – let’s not forget that and get distracted by all the other things this beaut country has to offer. Cricket first – so to keep with the spirit of things we’ll try to bring you a daily trivia update on the game or players.
Today’s opener is between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe – and DID YOU KNOW:
- Sri Lanka is the only national team to have two T20 centurions. Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan are among the seven players to have scored hundreds in the shortest format.
- All six of Zimbabwe’s top wicket-takers in T20 cricket are in their squad for this tournament. Prosper Utseya leads the charts with 16 scalps followed by Elton Chigumbura, Ray Price, Jyle Jarvis, Graeme Cremer and Chris Mpofu.
Should make for an interesting battle! Let’s GO!
Keep us posted with the scores!
